About the program.

How it works, and how long it will take.

As you move through your coursework in the MCCAP, you will be in the pilot's seat.

That's because WGU measures learning, not time spent in class or hours logged online. However, our most successful students commit 20 hours per week to study, attend scheduled online cohort sessions, and meet with their mentor and course instructor.

You advance through your coursework by passing assessments that prove you've learned what it takes to be successful—and you complete those assessments as soon as you're ready, not when a syllabus or semester schedule tells you.

What does that mean for you?

For one thing, it means you can study and access learning materials on your schedule—after work, on your days off, when the kids have gone to bed, whatever works for you. It also means that if you're a fast learner, if you already know the material well from previous experience, or if you have extra time to devote to studying, you can finish this program faster.

How fast?

Your time to completion will be uniquely yours. But on average, this is a roughly 9-month program at a medium pace. If you move faster, you could be done in 6 months; if it takes you a little longer, it could take as long as a year. For more details about the program, view the student guide below.

Personalized support and high-quality learning.

Yes, you're in the pilot's seat—but you're not flying solo. You will have a trusted co-pilot and top-notch crew behind you the whole way.

Your co-pilot is your Program Mentor, a faculty member with real-world experience in healthcare and proven skills like life and career coaching. Your mentor's job is to guide you to success from the day you start to the day you finish. You will have check-in calls at least weekly to ensure you're making progress and clear any obstacles standing in your way.

Your crew is made up of highly trained subject-matter experts known as Course Instructors. These faculty members will work with you one-on-one regularly, and especially any time you're struggling to master a subject or learn a concept. They tailor learning to your needs and help bring the course content to life for you.

And speaking of course content, you'll have 24/7 access to nationally recognized learning resources of the highest quality. These resources will deliver job-relevant curriculum designed with input from leading employers, including case-based learning for practical skills application and job readiness.

What you'll get.

When you finish this program, you will receive:

  • A certificate of completion that demonstrates to employers that you completed a rigorous university program on medical coding.
  • skills transcript, which will outline for employers the knowledge you've gained and the skills you've mastered.
  • Transferrable college credit that you can bring with you to future academic endeavors. If you choose to enroll in a WGU bachelor's degree program, you'll have 15 credits to transfer into the B.S. Health Information Management degree program (BSHIM).

Along the way, you will be able to earn credentials that can build your résumé as you progress through the program.:

  • You will be awarded three badges from WGU marking your successful completion of sections of the program: the Professional Communication and Leadership Badge, the Medical Coder Novice Badge, and the Ready to Work Badge.
  • You will take the AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC®) national certification exam as part of this program.

Finish courses by proving what you know, as soon as you’re ready.

At WGU, success is measured by actual learning, not class time. You advance by demonstrating that you've mastered the course subject matter—whether you learned it through your study at WGU or picked up that knowledge through years of work experience.

Your progress through the course is driven by you.

Program Mentors.

Personally assigned to you from the day you enroll to the day you complete your program, your Program Mentor is your faculty member. Course Instructors.

Learning independently doesn’t mean learning on your own. Course Instructors are subject-matter experts who are on hand when you need them to ensure you’re mastering course material. They tailor learning to your needs, and the type and intensity of instructional support you receive varies based on your needs in any particular course.

Frequently asked questions!

Your Program Mentor's job description is simple: help you succeed. That means regular phone calls and check-ins—you will be expected to communicate regularly with your mentor about your progress, hurdles you're facing, successes you've achieved, questions you have, and your goals. WGU's unique, mentor-driven faculty model has been a hallmark of our student-centric approach since WGU was founded in the 1990s; it has received praise from academic experts, employers, and—most importantly—students and graduates, most of whom say their mentor was among their favorite parts of their WGU experience. "I couldn't have done it without my mentor" is a phrase we commonly hear at WGU.

You'll be ready to jump in start learning once you've committed to the program and had your first contact with your Program Mentor. Your Mentor will reach out to you as soon as he or she is assigned to you. In that first conversation, you'll receive your login credentials for your Learning Environment, information on how to get started, and answers to any questions you may have up front.
