New Year's resolution or retrospective?

New Year resolution

Happy New Year! Now is the time when many will make the infamous New Year's Resolution to change or improve something in their lives. Others will make a resolution not to make a “resolution” because they expect to give up within 30 days. Do you fall into one of these categories?

In 2018, maybe you can change your mindset on this 'resolution thing'. Instead, call it a time for “personal retrospective”. Review any disappointing losses, celebrate your biggest wins, identify your biggest opportunities, and prepare to dominate the upcoming year.

The following writing exercise may help with the process. Pick a particular situation, project or time period and ask yourself the following questions:

  • What’s working? (“What did I do right? What am I proud of?”)
  • What’s not working? (“What could be improved? What are my biggest opportunities for growth?”)
  • How can I fix what’s not working for a better result? (“What specific things can I focus on next time?”)
  • What resources do I need to help me accomplish my goal of (X)? ("Who can I job shadow or who can act as a confidante/mentor? How can I make better use of available literature, networking connections or affiliations relevant to my objective (goal)?")

Whatever you decide to commit to, make S.M.A.R.T. goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely.
