Part-Time Options for Military Students
Part-Time Program Options to Help Those Who Serve Achieve Their Goals
All WGU programs are available as a military part-time option. Some programs may require full-time attendance in terms when nursing clinicals or demonstration teaching are part of the curriculum.
The part-time option is only available to service members utilizing Tuition Assistance. (This option is not available to regular WGU students or to veterans using benefits under the Montgomery GI Bill®.) Your personal degree plan may vary based on any waivers you receive in transfer for prior academic experience. Talk to the Military Support team for details.
- Full-time flat-rate option: The degree plan for a normal full-time student typically assumes the student will complete 12 to 13 competency units (CUs, or credit-hour equivalents) per six-month term. The student may actually complete more CUs than are included in the plan if the student is able to progress faster. Many do complete more. The flat-rate tuition option for students in a graduate program requires a minimum of 8 CUs.
- Military part-time option: Under this option, the degree plan of a part-time student will be scheduled for a specific number of competency units per six-month term. The allowed range is 5 to 8 CUs per term for undergraduate programs (4 to 7 for graduate programs). The specific number of CUs will depend upon the Course of Study for a particular program and the student’s own situation. Students using this option will not be allowed to continue on beyond the allotted CUs until the next term, even if they complete the required assessments early in the term. WGU shares all costs up front with every student. See details on pricing available to military part-time students.
Note: Some programs are designed with integrated content and assessments that necessitate the student be enrolled full-time for at least one term. Reach out to Enrollment with any questions.

Helpful notes:
- View a detailed chart, showing tuition costs per credit unit at each tuition rate.
- Part-time tuition is set at 6–11 competency units per term for undergraduate degrees and 4–7 competency units per term for graduate degrees.
- Tuition will be adjusted by the number of competency units attempted within the term, not by time attended.
- Only tuition will be prorated. The resource fee and any program fees are still charged at the full amount for the entire term.
- Military students may be able to supplement their tuition assistance with benefits from the Montgomery GI Bill® if they are eligible.
- Federal financial aid is not available for part-time students but may be available for full-time military students.
- Students with military education benefits other than Military Tuition Assistance are not eligible for the part-time option.
- WGU reserves the right to change any of its tuition and fees. Students will be notified in advance of the new tuition rates.
Tuition for the full term is due at the beginning of each term. For regular new students, payment is due on or before the 22nd of the month preceding their intended program start date. Returned checks will be assessed a service charge. Students are responsible for payment of tuition and fees. Failure to receive payment in full by the end of the current term is grounds for administrative withdrawal.
Military Tuition Assistance (TA), Post 9/11 (CH 33) and VA Voc-Rehab students may be eligible for a deferral of the tuition cost paid by their military education benefits once the appropriate form(s) has been completed, authorized, and received by WGU’s VA Department.
