WGU is a nonprofit, online university established in 1997 by 19 U.S. governors to expand affordable access to higher education.
In 21 years, WGU has grown as a national university with more than 98,000 students and 111,000 graduates in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, as well as military service personnel working overseas.
WGU offers more than 60 online, competency-based degree programs in the high-demand career fields of business, information technology, K–12 teacher education, and health professions, including nursing.
WGU’s online, competency-based model is designed for busy adults who must balance work, family, and financial obligations. It allows them to set their own study schedules and move quickly through material they already know so they can focus on what they still need to learn.
WGU faculty members serve as Program Mentors and Course Instructors, working one-on-one with students to guide them through their coursework and support their learning.
WGU’s degree programs are developed in collaboration with representatives from relevant industries and academia and are reviewed regularly to ensure that they are up-to-date and relevant.
WGU’s tuition, which is charged at a flat rate, is less than $6,500 a year for most undergraduate degree programs and about $7,500 for most graduate programs.
Terms at WGU are six months long, and students may begin on the first day of any month.

WGU Ohio currently serves 2,189 students in all 88 counties in the state.
71% of active students are classified as underserved in one of four categories:
- 46% represent the first generation in their family to attend college.
- 18% are ethnic minorities.
- 23% are classified as low income.
- 21% live in rural areas.
86% are 26 years of age or older.
The average age of students is 36 years old; the youngest student is 19 years old; the oldest is 70 years old.
64% are female; 36% are male.
77% of students are employed full-time; 11% of students are employed part-time.
8% of students actively serve in the military, are veterans, or are spouses or dependents of those in the military.
