Reading week was February 25 through March 1, and WGU Nevada coordinated an event that benefitted first graders and shelter dogs alike. Friday, WGU Nevada partnered with Jobs for America’s Graduations (JAG Nevada), The Animal Foundation, and first graders within the Clark County School District (CCSD).
The Animal Foundation hosted 80 CCSD first-grade students from CT Sewell and Cambeiro Elementary Schools. This fourth annual event brought children and dogs together as WGU Nevada continues to support school-aged children as they learn to read.
Reading to pets is a great, non-threatening way for children to feel comfortable and gain confidence in their reading capabilities.
In addition, the shelter dogs also receive benefits. It reduces the animals’ stress and anxiety; helps them learn appropriate social behavior; and makes them more adoptable. JAG Nevada high school students were on hand to lend support to the children as they read, offering guidance when they landed on a word they didn’t know.
Nevada Reading Week is an annual initiative for teachers and librarians to celebrate reading among students. This harbors the continuous love for reading that will benefit children as they grow up.
