How to transfer colleges to WGU.

If you’re reading this, you’re likely interested in pursuing a degree at WGU. Congratulations! You’ve taken an important first step in creating a better future. But it’s vital to do the research and really understand what going to a university will look like, especially when you're transferring colleges. And that starts with your academic plan, what courses you’ll have to take, and how it will work to begin transferring colleges.

It’s important to understand that each transfer and new student will be different when it comes to transfer credits. An individual transfer evaluation will take place for you, and an expert will review each course and determine how it will transfer over upon your admission. The transfer expert will help you outline an individualized and specific academic plan that is just for you that shows exactly which courses you’ll need to take to attend college once you've been admitted.

Getting a transcript evaluation doesn’t in any way obligate you to enroll at WGU, and you'll still have to get an admission decision from our academic team! It just gives you a clear picture of exactly what classes you will need to take and how quickly you can get your diploma. Many students find that after getting a transfer evaluation, they are much further down the path than they would have imagined, and going to a university is possible!

Sending transcripts to WGU.

The most important step for you here is to send all your transcripts to our official transfer office. so we can start analyzing them. At WGU, we accept only official transcripts, so you’ll need to request official documentation from any previous school you attended. Even if you only took one class, send us your official transcripts so we can properly analyze everything and determine what courses you need to take.

Most universities will have a transfer office that will help you get official transcripts sent over to us. Sending official transcripts may come with a small fee, but it’s a small price to pay to cut down on the courses you have to take and large tuition sums!

An official transfer credit evaluation is the only way to really determine what courses you need to take to fulfill your coursework requirements. There are more general guides that can help you get an idea of what kinds of college transfer options you can expect at WGU.

Bachelor's degree credit transfers.

Each bachelor’s degree has its own specific set of transfer allowances here at WGU. This guide can help you understand what courses are required of each program, and how credits could transfer. Again, you do need an official transfer evaluation to be certain of how your credits will transfer, but these guides can give you a great first look.

Most of the time students are able to waive their “general education” requirements through transfer credits. This is because most students come to WGU after doing some college coursework at a community college or another university, or have an associate’s degree from another college.

For the most part, an associate’s degree will waive all of your “general education” requirements and allow you to start much further down the path for your bachelor’s.

There are also partnerships that WGU has with several colleges around the country that can aid in transfers. This guide will help you know which colleges and community colleges we partner with to help students easily transfer and finish their education.

Similarly, WGU accepts AP and CE credits from high school students who have started their college journey earlier. You will submit those credits along with college transcripts to determine if they can help you waive courses at WGU.

Your bachelor’s degree may be much closer than you think. Get a transcript evaluation and get started on the path today!

Master's degree credit transfers.

Like most master’s degree programs in the country, WGU doesn’t accept transfer credit for these programs. Master’s programs are much different from bachelor’s degrees in that they don’t have “general education” courses that you have to take. Master’s degree programs are strictly the specific courses for your education. For example, your MBA courses are just business courses. Your IT Management Master’s degree is just IT courses. Because of this, WGU and most universities require that you begin and end your master’s degree program at one school.

But don’t worry! Even if you can’t utilize transfer credits for your master’s degree, there are other options that WGU offers that will help you move through your program quickly. Our competency-based education model allows you to move through courses once you’ve mastered the material. That means if you understand a course or a subject, you’ll be able to move through it quickly. This can help you graduate faster, even without transfer credits. This is true of both bachelor’s and master’s degrees, so you’re truly in control of your education and learning.

WGU works hard to make education accessible for students. This includes ensuring that the education you’ve already received is put to good use. An official transcript evaluation will help you get on the path to your bachelor’s degree, and help you finish what you started.

Work with your enrollment counselor to find out where you are on the transcript evaluation process, and know that your diploma could be well within your reach.
