There is no question that careers we are familiar with are changing and evolving. When, not if, this happens, we could see drastic shifts in what career opportunities are available. The only way to prepare for this shift is education. Artificial Intelligence (AI) could replace human beings in many jobs from food servers to healthcare professionals, and we all need to be prepared for what that means.
According to Big Think, “The general consensus on whether robots will take jobs wholesale remains mixed but is trending towards resignation. The optimists believe that, as with the Industrial Revolution and the Agricultural Revolution, the technological improvements that will come from the dawning era of artificial intelligence and its offshoot in modern robotics will create more new jobs than they destroy.”
Educators need to determine which jobs will likely go and which jobs will emerge. Technological industries such as robotics, IT, and machinery can prove to be valuable career opportunities that would allow people to work with robots and AI, not against them. Ultimately, educators need to prepare for the unknown, and in so doing, prepare students for the unknown as well.
Education Dive went on to say:
“Because the demands of the workplace are continually changing, students also must become lifelong learners and teachers need to cultivate that desire in them. The future is challenging, exciting and rewarding, but educators must also focus on their own learning if they are to help pave the way for student success.”
Accessible education will play a crucial role in the changing landscape of the workforce, and as Education Dive said, it will be what you know but also the desire to know.
“Ongoing education will prove important going forward,” said Chancellor Spencer Stewart. “Educators, employees, and students must all be ready to adapt to the changing workforce dynamic and be ready to pivot into alternative education when necessary. Sometimes the jobs we start may not be the jobs we end up in, and with AI, this could especially be true.”
Do not fear the AI future we are approaching, instead cling to your curiosity and your desire to learn, as this is the new future of workforce.
