INDIANAPOLIS – WGU Indiana, the online, competency-based university, today announces it will award 10 newly enrolled students $10,000 scholarships in 2020 in honor of its 10th anniversary. The nonprofit university aims to award more than $1 million in scholarships this year after a record year in 2019. Last year alone, WGU Indiana awarded 473 scholarships totaling $911,713.
Since its inception in 2010 as the first state model of Western Governors University, WGU Indiana has awarded 2,602 scholarships to qualifying students, totaling more than $5 million over the course of its first decade. In 2019, WGU Indiana increased the amount of scholarships awarded to students by 27%. WGU Indiana currently has more than 5,500 enrolled students and more than 9,000 alumni.
“At WGU Indiana, we make potential thrive by creating pathways between talent and opportunity,” said WGU Indiana Chancellor Alison Bell. “In addition to our affordable tuition, scholarships ease the financial burden for students and allow them to finish their degrees faster. Through the 10th Anniversary Scholarship, which gives 10 students enough to cover nearly the entire cost of a WGU Indiana degree, our goal is to ensure that anyone who has a dream to further their education or career goals has the opportunity to do so.”
WGU Indiana is the state's only fully online, competency-based university and offers more than 60 accredited bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in business, information technology, K–12 education, and health professions, including nursing. A state-based subsidiary of nationally recognized, accredited, nonprofit Western Governors University, WGU Indiana is open to all qualified Indiana residents. WGU Indiana’s affordable tuition and competency-based model allows students more flexibility to graduate at their own pace.
Recipients will be awarded $2,500 toward their WGU Indiana tuition each six-month term, for up to four terms. Applications are open and scholarships will be awarded on a rolling basis with the first two scholarship winners announced at WGU Indiana’s 10th anniversary reception in June 2020. The additional eight scholarships will be awarded throughout the calendar year. Applications will effectively close on Nov. 1, 2020, but prospective students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
