ST. LOUIS – WGU Missouri continues to demonstrate its commitment to expanding access to affordable, higher education for working adults across the state. The online, nonprofit university today announced it has invested more than $600,000 in scholarships for new students during the 2019 calendar year, helping make the dream of higher education a reality for hundreds across Missouri.
Although WGU Missouri is known for its affordable tuition and competency-based model that allows students to graduate faster, university-funded scholarships have been key in helping lower tuition even more. In just this past year, WGU received nearly 800 applications and awarded 262 scholarships, totaling $641,617, to students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in business, K-12 teacher education, information technology and health professions, including nursing. Since its inception, WGU Missouri has awarded 980 scholarships to qualifying students, totaling more than $2.9 million.
“We want to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to achieve their educational and career goals, and the scholarships we offer are just one of the many ways we can help adults who are interesting in furthering their education,” said WGU Missouri Chancellor Dr. Angie Besendorfer. “Earning a college degree is a stepping stone to a better career and a brighter future, and providing scholarships and access to affordable, high-quality education is part of our investment in the future of our students.”
WGU Missouri awards scholarships based on three factors: meeting the basic eligibility requirements, answers given on the application and an interview with a scholarship counselor. Scholarships from the university are awarded to students following the online application process. The scholarship committee recurrently awards scholarships throughout the year, as new students are admitted to their programs each month.
