DURHAM — The World Health Organization has designated 2020 as the Year of the Nurse and Midwife in honor of the 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale. The American Nursing Association celebrates May as Nurses Month. In recognition of these two observances, WGU North Carolina, an affiliate of the online nonprofit Western Governors University, has announced the launch of Nurses Appreciation Scholarships for nurses interested in furthering their education.
WGU is offering up to $50,000 in scholarships to new students wishing to pursue a CCNE-accredited BSN or MSN degree, or a bachelor’s or master’s degree in specialties that include healthcare management and health information management. The application deadline is June 30. More information, and the application form, can be found at https://www.wgu.edu/financial-aid-tuition/scholarships/general/nurses-appreciation.html.
Multiple scholarships valued at up to $2,500 and applied at $625 per six-month term will be awarded to motivated nurses and healthcare workers who are ready to take on the increasing challenges of today’s healthcare practice. Tuition is around $3,250 per term for most WGU degree programs.
“The current COVID-19 crisis has truly demonstrated the value and heroism of nurses and healthcare professionals,” said WGU North Carolina Chancellor Catherine Truitt. “It is with the utmost gratitude and respect that we offer these scholarships to nurses across our state.”
More than 820 North Carolinians are currently enrolled in WGU’s College of Health Professions, and more than 1,450 graduates of the college currently live in the state.
