WGU President Scott Pulsipher's Statement on the Events of Jan. 6

The unlawful and anti-democratic actions that took place yesterday in our nation’s capital are shocking, deeply troubling, and an affront to the rule of law that sustains the liberty we so greatly prize. The peaceful transfer of power is a hallmark of our nation and critical to its future. On behalf of the WGU community, I want to express our strong condemnation of the acts of violence and intimidation on display today; WGU will forever stand for the respectful and productive exchange of ideas that is so vital to a thriving democracy.

While the actions of a few are grievous, we see evidence of human goodness and potential even on such a tragic day. We express gratitude to so many of our elected leaders, who are faithfully executing the duties of their office to uphold the rule of law and our democratic norms, especially in the face of overt aggression. The interests of our nation should always take precedence over partisan ones, particularly when such foundational elements of our democracy are at stake. Our thoughts and prayers are for their safety, and for all those in our nation’s capital tonight.

At WGU, our mission is to change lives for the better by creating pathways to opportunity. That mission is anchored in our belief in the inherent worth of every individual. A belief rooted in the founding of our nation, and central to our shared objectives of liberty and prosperity. We are dedicated to creating and sustaining a civil, inclusive environment for all learners. We look forward to our continued engagement with all our nation’s leaders to advance equitable opportunity for all Americans, and that we may see hope, progress, and prosperity extend to every individual.

With respect and hope,

Scott D. Pulsipher
