Song requirements.

  • Songs must be between two and five minutes long
  • Video must have a resolution suitable for a large screen projection (1024 x 760) Accepted file formats are .MP4, .MOV, or .WMV.
  • Video must either feature a performance of the song or original music video.
  • Applicants and any participants in the video must be 18 or older.
  • Adults must submit a release and consent form for the content they are submitting. 
  • Song must include a title screen that includes the entrant name, and title of the song.
  • The entrant or alumni must do the majority of the work, and the entrant must deliver the song.
  • Song submissions must be received by April 16, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. PDT.
  • Song must not include any abusive, profane, pornographic, disrespectful, discriminatory, threatening or defamatory toward any person, entity, belief, creation, place, or symbol.
  • No third-party intellectual property or copyright-protected content or material may be used in your song.  If a brand of another (e.g., image of a Pepsi can, Nike symbol on a shirt, or other trademark or copyright symbol or marking, etc.) appears in the video, you must ensure that it is not viewable.  If you quote research, another individual or organization in your song, you must have permission from the author of the content.  You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold Western Governors University harmless against any claim, damage, loss, or expense arising from Western Governors University’s use of your song and your infringement of another’s third-party intellectual property rights.

Submission process.

Song submission.

Songs may be submitted through the contest website starting on March 19th, 2021. The deadline for submissions is 11:59 p.m. PDT on April 16th, 2021. Winners will be announced no later than April 26th, 2021.

Entrants should keep at least one copy of their song. Western Governors University is not responsible for any films that are lost, damaged, or that do not upload properly.


Prizes.

The winning song’s creators will receive a $1,000 American Express Gift Card. The winning song will also be featured on WGU Washington and Alumni blog, website, and other social media channels. 

By accepting the prizes, winners agree to hold Western Governors University and all Western Governors University employees harmless against any and all claims and liability arising out of use of such prizes. Winner assumes all liability for any injury or damage caused from participation in the contest or use/redemption of any prize.

Judging.

Judges: 
Judges of the competition shall be no less than four (4) employees of the Western Governors University Marketing Division and Northwest Region Team. The judges’ decision is final. No one will be allowed to be a judge if he/she has a conflict of interest with respect to any of the contest entrants, as determined by Western Governors University marketing department in its sole discretion. Any Western Governors University employees or their immediate family members are ineligible to participate.

Quality submissions have the following characteristics (can vary)

  •  Good lighting
  • A plain background
  • The entrant is dressed professionally
  • Length is 2-5 minutes long
  • The song is memorized
  • The entrant sings and speaks clearly

Disqualification: The judges reserve the right to disqualify any team, contributor, entrant, or entered song that does not comply with the Official Rules and other Contest requirements communicated by the organizer. They also reserve the right to disqualify songs submitted by or promoting for-profit entities at the sole discretion of Western Governors University.

Additional terms.

BY SUBMITTING AN ENTRY:

Entrant unconditionally assigns and transfers to Western Governors University all rights, ownership, title, interest and claim (including without limitation all copyrights), which it now has or may have in the future, to entries (including, without limitation, the submitted song), whether or not acceptable to Western Governors University and regardless of the form they take, or any element(s) thereof and further grants to Western Governors University the right to use, publish, exploit and/or modify any entry and/or song submitted in connection herewith in any manner it wishes, regardless if the media is now existing or hereafter created. Western Governors University reserves the right to verify eligibility qualifications of the winner. US law governs these contest rules.

Western Governors University reserves the right to edit and/or modify any song content or song titles and publish or advertise the song without Entrant’s approval, acknowledgement or compensation unless prohibited by law. By entering, Entrant agrees to defend, release and hold harmless Western Governors University and its agents from and against any claims, action and/or liability for injury, loss or damage of any kind resulting from Entrant’s participation herein (including in connection with the use and/or exploitation of the submitted song) or from the acceptance or use of any prize awarded. 

Western Governors University has the right to modify, use, assign or dispose of your entry however it sees fit without approval of entrant or any third party. Entrants grants Western Governors University the right to use their names, images, likenesses, photographs, voices and biographical materials, and song submissions, for advertising, publicity and promotion purposes including posting the songs or screen names online for any purpose or on a winner’s list and other online announcements, and for sharing the songs with the media for viewing, whether TV or print, without additional compensation, unless prohibited by law. Neither entrants nor winner shall receive any compensation or credit for use of entries, other than that disclosed in these rules. 

Western Governors University is not responsible for incorrect or inaccurate transcription of entry information, or for any human or other error, technical malfunctions, lost/delayed data transmission, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, line failures of any telephone network, computer equipment, software, inability to access any online service or web site, or any other error or malfunction, or any injury or damage to participant’s or any other person’s computer related to or resulting from participation herein, or for any injury to person or property, including but not limited to song equipment, arising from the entrant’s participation herein or for the use or misuse of any prize won. Western Governors University is not responsible for lost, late, illegible or misdirected entries.

Entrant warrants that their submission is original, that publication of the submission will not infringe on the rights of others, and Entrant has full power to grant ownership to Western Governors University as stated herein.

Western Governors University has no obligation of any nature to publish, promote, display or otherwise use any information provided by Entrants, including but not limited to biographical or song content.

All taxes are the responsibility of the winners.
