If you've said this to yourself before, now is the time to get started. This is your first step to making that dream a reality. We're here to help you learn about the step-by-step process of becoming qualified to teach. Whatever grade or subject that you want to teach, this guide will help you get started. Learn about the degrees, certifications, and classroom time you'll need in order to be prepared to change your life.
You might be wondering what education you need to become a teacher, and the answer is pretty straightforward. The first thing you'll need to do to be qualified to become a teacher is to get a bachelor's degree. Each state has its own requirements to become a teacher, but across the country, you do need at least a bachelor's degree to become a teacher.
If you already have a bachelor’s degree in a non-teaching field, WGU’s post-baccalaureate teacher-preparation or master of arts in teaching programs are the choice for you. These teacher-prep programs qualify you to become licensed in the field of your choice, training you to become a highly qualified teacher.

Institutional Authorization
American Samoa does not regulate distance education. Therefore, approval for WGU to offer distance education programs to students located in American Samoa is not required.
Educational Prerequisites
The American Samoa Department of Education requires prospective educators to complete an American Samoa approved program. Prospective educators may not complete a program that is out-of-state, like at WGU. In addition, educators may not transfer a license from another state using any pathway.
For this reason, WGU’s programs do not meet any of the educational prerequisites for licensure in the field of education in American Samoa. Candidates interested in teaching in American Samoa may consult the American Samoa Department of Education website.
Candidates will not be accepted for enrollment in WGU’s education programs if they are seeking a license in American Samoa.

Experience inside a classroom is vital to help you prepare to be a teacher and is a requirement for certification in most states. Usually called "student teaching," this experience requires you to work with a current educator as you teach or team-teach a group of students for an extended period of time.
At WGU, student teaching or demonstration teaching is required for completion of your degree. This in-classroom experience is full time and supervised for 12-20 weeks.
As you approach the demonstration teaching portion of your program, a WGU Placement Specialist will work with you to set up your placement. The process of scheduling your DT placement may take up to six months.
Demonstration teaching may not be waived and prior experience may not be used to satisfy this requirement as you must demonstrate competency in the classroom in order to complete your WGU degree program.
Learn more about the details of demonstration teaching at WGU here.
If being a teacher is your dream, it's time to get started on your journey to become one. You can apply to WGU today and get started as soon as next month. Don't delay, your future career is waiting!
