Education Career Guide How to become a teacher.

I want to become a teacher.

If you've said this to yourself before, now is the time to get started. This is your first step to making that dream a reality. We're here to help you learn about the step-by-step process of becoming qualified to teach. Whatever grade or subject that you want to teach, this guide will help you get started. Learn about the degrees, certifications, and classroom time you'll need in order to be prepared to change your life.

Steps to becoming a teacher.

Step 1: Get a degree.

You might be wondering what education you need to become a teacher, and the answer is pretty straightforward. The first thing you'll need to do to be qualified to become a teacher is to get a bachelor's degree. Each state has its own requirements to become a teacher, but across the country, you do need at least a bachelor's degree to become a teacher.

  • Some states and schools are willing to work with any bachelor's degree, and provide candidates with alternative routes to licensure to qualify them to teach. So if you're making a teacher career change, you might not have to go back to school. For the most part, as long as you have a bachelor's degree, you likely have the option to become a teacher. Plan to work with the school or state board of education where you want to get hired to learn about your options.
  • Teaching older students may be different; some states and schools will require specific majors and degree programs to teach specific subjects to older students. For example, many schools require math teachers to have a degree in math or math teaching.
  • If you don't already have a bachelor's degree and know you want to become a teacher, WGU offers many degree programs that are perfect for you. These degrees will give you the coursework and education you need to be a good teacher as well as help you prepare for certifications and licensure in your state. WGU also offers degrees for specific teaching paths, including math, to English, to science.

If you already have a bachelor’s degree in a non-teaching field, WGU’s post-baccalaureate teacher-preparation or master of arts in teaching programs are the choice for you. These teacher-prep programs qualify you to become licensed in the field of your choice, training you to become a highly qualified teacher.

Step 3: Classroom experience.

Experience inside a classroom is vital to help you prepare to be a teacher and is a requirement for certification in most states. Usually called "student teaching," this experience requires you to work with a current educator as you teach or team-teach a group of students for an extended period of time.

At WGU, student teaching or demonstration teaching is required for completion of your degree. This in-classroom experience is full time and supervised for 12-20 weeks.

As you approach the demonstration teaching portion of your program, a WGU Placement Specialist will work with you to set up your placement. The process of scheduling your DT placement may take up to six months.

Demonstration teaching may not be waived and prior experience may not be used to satisfy this requirement as you must demonstrate competency in the classroom in order to complete your WGU degree program.

Learn more about the details of demonstration teaching at WGU here.
