A NEW KIND OF U™
Your path toward a respected degree.
WGU is a top military-friendly university.
You served the needs of your country. Now let us serve your education needs.
Earn your degree online at WGU and maximize your veterans education benefits.
As the nation’s first online, nonprofit, competency-based university, Western Governors University is committed to providing a challenging, cost-effective way for military veterans to earn a degree and move ahead. Since its founding by 19 U.S. governors, thousands of military men, women, and their spouses have trusted WGU to serve their education needs.
Veterans benefits.
WGU degree programs are approved for VA benefits under the Montgomery GI Bill®. Eligibility and amounts depend upon your years of service and other factors.
GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). More information about education benefits offered by VA is available here.
Scholarships available.
WGU also offers a number of scholarships, including some exclusively available to military personnel, veterans, and their families.
Scholarships are among the many ways WGU thanks you for your service and removes obstacles from the path to your education goals and improved your career opportunities.
*Note: Because of WGU’s low, flat-rate tuition, veterans are generally eligible for benefits that more than cover the full cost of tuition, fees, and resources.
"Our goal from day one was to provide education to more people and to change the way higher education was delivered." Dr. Sam Smith

WGU provides a better learning experience.
WGU’s rigorous, competency-based approach is ideal for self-directed learners anxious to advance their education and careers. Unlike other universities, both traditional and online, WGU doesn’t award degrees based on seat time. Instead, you earn your degree by demonstrating your competence in your field.
Through independent study and online resources you learn and master essential skills and knowledge necessary for success. Then, through carefully designed assessments, you prove your competency. Assessments can take the form of essays, exams, research papers, and an assortment of projects that can be completed online.
WGU is flexible and supportive.
If your schedule demands flexibility, WGU is for you. In most cases, you will access course material or study independently at the time and place you choose. You can progress at a pace that enables you to earn a college degree while managing your career, your family, and life’s other challenges. Our competency-based approach to education allows for extensive personalization of your program to fit around your busy schedule.
When you become a student, you’ll study under the guidance of a dedicated mentor who will work with and support you from enrollment to graduation. Together, with your mentor, you’ll develop your personalized Degree Plan—a roadmap and schedule for successfully completing your program.
